Snowmen All Year by Caralyn Buehner

August 1, 2011 - 7:50 pm No Comments

What if snowmen could stay with us all year? We could fly kites with them and take them to the beach. We could go camping with them and catch fireflies in the summer. A very cute rhyming book about all of the fun things you could do with your snowman if they could just figure out a way to stick around past winter.

Me and You by Anthony Browne

July 28, 2011 - 4:40 pm No Comments

This is a modern take on Goldilocks and the Three Little Bears in an urban setting. The story of the bears and their walk while their porridge cools is told alongside the wordless story of a girl who gets lost and ends up at the Bears’ house. She tastes their porridge, sits in their chairs and sleeps in their beds, but the ending has a new little twist that will leave you smiling.

Jam & Honey by Melita Morales

July 27, 2011 - 3:48 pm No Comments

At first it seems like this is a cute story about a little girl and her mother going out to pick berries so they can make jam. As the girl is picking berries she comes across a bee which she’s a little nervous about. As the story continues though, the tale shifts a bit and the reader sees the bee’s side of the story as well. It turns out he’s a little nervous about the little girl, too.

Tallulah’s Tutu by Marilyn Singer

July 25, 2011 - 9:49 am No Comments

I would have LOVED this book as a little girl. Just like Tallulah, all I wanted to do was take dance classes and get a tutu. I love that this book isn’t just a frilly book about ballet though. Tallulah wants a tutu, but she quickly realizes that she doesn’t just get one…she has to earn it and that comes through hard work and dedication.

Sweet Dreams Lullaby by Betsy Snyder

This is an adorable rhyming bedtime book and the illustrations are fantastic. This is definitely a keeper and one that should be added to your child’s personal library.

Tiny stars are shining bright,
whispering a warm “good night.”
Wish on twinkles up above
and dream of everything you love.

Pirate vs. Pirate by Mary Quattlebaum

July 21, 2011 - 11:11 am No Comments

If you like to get your pirate voice on while you’re reading, then this will be a fun one for you. Bad Bart rules the Atlantic while Mean Mo rules the Pacific. They meet up somewhere in the middle and have a showdown. They test their skills in swimming, throwing cannonballs, arm wrestling’ and eating hardtack. The final competition is what leads you to the end of the book which might be a bit of a surprise. Super cute.

Daddy Adventure Day by Dave Keane

July 18, 2011 - 10:00 am No Comments

I don’t think the daddy in this story expected Daddy Adventure Day to start at 4:15 in the morning, but sometimes kids are just so excited that it doesn’t matter what time it is. I also don’t think he expected to have coffee and hot chocolate spilled all over his pants during Daddy Adventure Day, but well, sometimes those things happen. I also don’t think he expected to come home with a foul ball from the baseball game they went to. Sometimes those special days we plan don’t go exactly as we had expected. Sometimes they turn out even better.

The Cow Loves Cookies by Karma Wilson

July 16, 2011 - 11:21 am No Comments

This is an adorable book about all of the animals on the farm and what the farmer feeds them. It all seems pretty typical until you get to the cow who, as you may have guessed, likes cookies. This is a great book for young ones because it rhymes and it has repetition, both of which are stepping stones to helping young children become readers themselves. The clever ending of this book will leave you smiling, too.

We’ve All Got Bellybuttons! by David Martin

July 15, 2011 - 7:09 pm No Comments

Oh my goodness, this book would have been a hit in our house about seven years ago when I had little ones running around. It rhymes, it has animals in it and it talks about body parts. I loved that age when our boys were into pointing to their ears, eyes, mouth, nose, belly…oh, the good ol’ days. 🙂

Wikki Stix

July 10, 2011 - 10:54 am No Comments

When children are ready to start exploring the shapes of letters and numbers, Wikki Stix are a super fun way for children to practice, especially if Wikki Stix are new to them. Wikki Stix are essentially wax covered yarn that you can bend and stick into whatever shape you’d like which is why they are great for practicing letter and number shapes. Some kids may be able to figure out how to manipulate the Wikki Stix into letter and number shapes without having an example to follow. Others, however, may need the shape to follow either just to look at as a model or they may need to have an example that they can place their Wikki Stix on top of to follow. Then, when they are done practicing their letters and numbers, they can use them to make whatever they want.

For older kids, they can be used to practice sight words. They can also be used to practice writing their name or family members’ names.
