If You Take a Mouse to School by Laura Numeroff

August 24, 2011 - 7:07 pm No Comments

If you take a mouse to school you will have to share your sandwich. He will want to borrow your paper, your pencils AND your lunchbox. He will make a mess and will make you wonder why you ever brought your mouse to school. Kids love these books by Laura Numberoff and this one is no exception and is a perfect read for back to school season.

Alice Ann Gets Ready for School by Cynthia Jabar

August 24, 2011 - 6:39 pm No Comments

Alice Ann has a lot to do to get ready for her first day of school. She finds the perfect shoes and the perfect lunchbox and the perfect notebooks in her favorite colors. Alice Ann is up and at ’em on the first day…she eats her breakfast, her sister fixes her hair and then Alice Ann lets her younger brother help her get her backpack packed while her dad makes her lunch. Pictures are taken and then dad dad yells “BUS!” and Alice Ann is off and running. I love this book because not only does it tell the story of Alice Ann getting ready for school, but it also shows the love that these family members have for each other in how they help each other out, reassure each other and tell stories of the days when they were in school.

This School Year Will Be the Best! by Kay Winters

August 22, 2011 - 4:54 pm No Comments

Books can be great stepping stones for discussion…this one is the perfect example of that. All of the children in the class list one thing they would like to see happen this year..from getting the best seat on the bus to wishing for a snow day to going on a really cool field trip. All of the children have their own hopes for the new school year…what is your child looking forward to?

Follow the Line to School by Laura Ljungkvist

August 17, 2011 - 3:23 pm No Comments

LOVE this book! It is so fun and colorful and is such a great way to introduce children to all the things they might see and do at school. I also love it because it’s interactive. It not only asks children about what they see in the pictures, but it also asks them questions about themselves, like what letter their first name starts with and what they would pack in their own lunchbox.

The Awful Aardvarks Shop for School by Reeve Lindbergh

August 12, 2011 - 8:39 pm No Comments

If you think your kids are a mess when you take them shopping then you will feel so much better after you read this book to your children. The Aardvarks go back-to-school shopping and completely destroy the shoe store, the toy store, the candy store and every store in between. They do end up seeing how messy they have been and help clean everything up and do eventually leave, but not before reminding the storekeepers that they will be back next fall.

Harry and the Dinosaurs Go To School by Ian Whybrow

August 12, 2011 - 5:44 pm No Comments

Harry takes his bucket of dinosaurs to school on the first day of school, but leaves them outside his classroom with the lunches and coats because he’s too shy to ask if he can bring them inside the classroom. Harry is not enjoying his day without his dinosaurs until he finds another friend who is also having a not-so-great day. It turns out that they both LOVE dinosaurs and it also turns out that their teacher loves dinosaurs, too. This would be a great read for any child who loves dinosaurs. It would also be a great story for a child starting preschool or kindergarten soon.

What Teachers Can’t Do by Douglas Wood

August 12, 2011 - 5:36 pm No Comments

Such a cute book about all the things teachers can’t do. They can’t clean the blackboard by themselves or buy their own apples. They can’t be tardy or teach without flowers on their desk. They never run out of smiley face stickers and they can’t wait to come back to school the next day. A great book for the days leading up to school starting.

The Curious Little Witch by Lieve Baeten

August 9, 2011 - 3:37 pm No Comments

Lizzie is a curious little witch who just can’t help herself and she HAS to go and check out the house that still has its lights on when the rest of the world is sleeping. Lizzie’s curiosity causes her to break her broomstick and her trip through the very interesting house ends up with Lizzie finally finding a way to get her broomstick fixed. This is a fun book to read because the pages are different sizes…they will make your little one want to turn the pages for you. There is also a fun little treat at the very end of the book.

The Boy and the Moon by James Christopher Carroll

August 9, 2011 - 3:19 pm No Comments

This was not a book I instantly fell in live with, but it grew on me. This book has sort of a magical feel…I think it’s the illustrations. In this story the moon gets stuck in a tree and although his animal friends are unable to help, the boy climbs the tree and comes up with an ingenious way to get the moon unstuck.

Brontorina by James Howe

August 5, 2011 - 9:37 am No Comments

All Brontorina wants is to be a ballerina. It turns out that she is actually very good, but there is the problem of space. Madame Lucille’s dance studio just isn’t big enough for all of her students AND Brontorina. No worries though, they all work together to find a new space that is big enough for everyone. Super cute story that reminded me a little bit of Clorinda, another super cute story about a dancing animal.
