Families Have Together by Harriet Ziefert

L.O.V.E. this book!

Mornings have hugs.
Toasters have plugs.
Breakfast has mugs.

Leaves have rakes.
Birthdays have cakes.
Bellies have aches.

But my favorite is the last line…Families have together.

The illustrations in this book are so cute and I love that it rhymes, too.

A little girl has a loose tooth and she is hoping falls out soon because she needs the money from the tooth fairy so she can buy her dad a birthday present. I love that is rhymes and that it mixes English and Spanish together is a way that you can figure out what the Spanish words mean even if you don’t know Spanish.

Another adorable addition to the Night Before books by Natasha Wing. This version shows all of the children around town making their Valentine’s and getting ready for the parties they will have at school the next day. It also shows the children enjoying all of the festivities in their classrooms the next day… complete with a secret Cupid who delivers a special surprise to the classroom.

Ten on the Sled by Kim Norman

January 19, 2011 - 6:24 pm No Comments

You can try to read this, but you will end up singing like I did.

There were ten on the sled
and the caribou said,
“Slip over! Slide over!”
So they all slid over,
and Seal spilled out.

There were nine on the sled
and the caribou said….

Super cute and so much fun to read…or sing. 🙂

A little girl wakes up to find it has snowed. She drags her dad outside to play, make snowmen, shovel and sled. This is a cute, short, rhyming book with colorful illustrations that would be perfect for the preschool and toddler set.

The Jacket I Wear in the Snow by Shirley Nitzel

January 1, 2011 - 9:55 pm No Comments

This is is a cumulative tale (kind of like The House that Jack Built) and it is also a rebus story which uses pictures to replace some of the words in the story. These types of stories are FANTASTIC for preschoolers and early readers. The repetition and rhyming are one bonus, but when pictures replace words in a story, they help the child to follow along which means they can help “read” part of the story which gets them engaged and excited about reading.
