The Awful Aardvarks Shop for School by Reeve Lindbergh

August 12, 2011 - 8:39 pm No Comments

If you think your kids are a mess when you take them shopping then you will feel so much better after you read this book to your children. The Aardvarks go back-to-school shopping and completely destroy the shoe store, the toy store, the candy store and every store in between. They do end up seeing how messy they have been and help clean everything up and do eventually leave, but not before reminding the storekeepers that they will be back next fall.

Snowmen All Year by Caralyn Buehner

August 1, 2011 - 7:50 pm No Comments

What if snowmen could stay with us all year? We could fly kites with them and take them to the beach. We could go camping with them and catch fireflies in the summer. A very cute rhyming book about all of the fun things you could do with your snowman if they could just figure out a way to stick around past winter.

Jam & Honey by Melita Morales

July 27, 2011 - 3:48 pm No Comments

At first it seems like this is a cute story about a little girl and her mother going out to pick berries so they can make jam. As the girl is picking berries she comes across a bee which she’s a little nervous about. As the story continues though, the tale shifts a bit and the reader sees the bee’s side of the story as well. It turns out he’s a little nervous about the little girl, too.

Sweet Dreams Lullaby by Betsy Snyder

This is an adorable rhyming bedtime book and the illustrations are fantastic. This is definitely a keeper and one that should be added to your child’s personal library.

Tiny stars are shining bright,
whispering a warm “good night.”
Wish on twinkles up above
and dream of everything you love.

The Cow Loves Cookies by Karma Wilson

July 16, 2011 - 11:21 am No Comments

This is an adorable book about all of the animals on the farm and what the farmer feeds them. It all seems pretty typical until you get to the cow who, as you may have guessed, likes cookies. This is a great book for young ones because it rhymes and it has repetition, both of which are stepping stones to helping young children become readers themselves. The clever ending of this book will leave you smiling, too.

We’ve All Got Bellybuttons! by David Martin

July 15, 2011 - 7:09 pm No Comments

Oh my goodness, this book would have been a hit in our house about seven years ago when I had little ones running around. It rhymes, it has animals in it and it talks about body parts. I loved that age when our boys were into pointing to their ears, eyes, mouth, nose, belly…oh, the good ol’ days. 🙂

How Many Kisses Do You Want Tonight? by Varsha Bajaj

June 27, 2011 - 9:27 am No Comments

This book is perfect for the toddler/preschooler in your life. It has animals, it rhymes and it has counting. Each animal in the book tells their mom or dad a certain number of kisses they need before they can go to sleep. Then a little girl asks for 100 kisses, one for each curl and a boy tells his mom he wants a million kisses. How many kisses do you think your child will ask for?

Poems Online

Poetry is a FANTASTIC way for beginning readers to practice fluency. These poems are short, they’re not intimidating and they rhyme which helps beginning readers decode new words. This link is only a small part of a bigger website. I especially love the poetry part of this website because you can listen to the poem, read it on your own, search for words with certain sounds or search for a certain word. Also, each poem focuses on a certain phonemic blend, like: ee, oo, igh, i-e, and several others.

Tickle, Tickle by Helen Oxenbury

June 13, 2011 - 12:03 pm No Comments

This is a very short book, but is a little big bigger in size than most board books which might make it easier for your little one to handle. Your child will love the pictures of babies getting dirty, taking a bath, brushing their hair and getting tickled. It also rhymes and might lead to a little tickle time of your own.

Who Says Moo? by Ruth Young

Okay, so this isn’t technically a board book, but it is a great book for those little ones who are into animals and animal sounds. It also rhymes and you know how much I love rhyming books.
