Spots: Counting Creatures from Sky to Sea by Carolyn Lesser

August 16, 2010 - 10:17 pm No Comments

It seems that almost every counting book I have read has fantastic vocabulary to go with it and this one is no exception…flapping, looping cruising spots…slinking, prowling, hunting spots…sloshing, wiggling, lurking spots…lots of great words to describe some not so common animals in these beautiful oil and gouache illustrations.

One Nighttime Sea by Deborah Lee Rose

August 15, 2010 - 11:39 pm No Comments

Such a neat book to explore some of the interesting creatures that live in the sea and work on counting all at the same time. This book is great for discussing new words (sea dragons, coral polyps, tide) and it has collage illustrations which are something to discuss with your child as well. How do these pictures look different than typical book illustrations?

The Little School Bus by Carol Roth

August 9, 2010 - 12:06 am No Comments

An adorable rhyming cumulative tale of a bunch of critters boarding the bus on the way to school…a goat in his coat, a pig in a wig, a sly fox wearing socks…Very cute and may help take the edge off the nerves any little ones getting ready to ride the bus for the first time this year may have.

A Place Called Kindergarten by Jessica Harper

August 3, 2010 - 3:23 pm No Comments

Tommy always goes down to the barn in the morning to say hi to the animals and to bring them all a treat. On this particular morning, however, he hasn’t shown up and the animals don’t know why until the family dog comes down to the barn to inform them that he heard the people in the house talking about it and Tommy went to a place called “kindergarten”. The animals are very concerned about what this place is, what it looks like and why Tommy is there. Tommy finally comes home at the end of the day and goes straight to the barn to tell the animals everything he learned that day. This is an adorable and very sweet story.

Daddy’s Little Scout by Janet Bingham

July 13, 2010 - 9:36 am No Comments

Little Fox has gotten too big for the den he lives in with his daddy, so they are on a search for a new place to live. Mrs. Finch and Squirrel live way up in the trees and although it would be neat to live in the trees, foxes don’t live in trees. They discover a mouse’s house, but Little Fox is too big and noisy to live in a little hole like a mouse. The stream where the fish live is too cold and wet for Little Fox, but it is fun to splash in. Mole’s hole is too dark and and rabbit’s hole is too crowded. Little Fox and his daddy dig and dig and dig all afternoon to make a den that is just right for them.

An Anaconda Ate My Homework! by Alice Schertle

June 29, 2010 - 11:02 pm No Comments

Digby could have just told his teacher that his dog ate his homework, but a giant raptor, crocodiles, an anaconda, a gorilla, a tiger, an elephant and a letter from the President make for a MUCH better story.
Your preschooler will enjoy Digby’s adventure (the illustrations alone will keep their attention) and the older ones will appreciate how Digby gets out of doing his homework.

Tumble Bumble by Felicia Bond

June 27, 2010 - 8:57 pm No Comments

This cute rhyming romp follows an insect as he goes for a walk. Along the way he meets up with a cat, a crocodile, a bee, a pig, a toad and a mouse. They all end up at a house and meet up with a bear, a spider and a mouse. The tumbly bumbly rhyming cadence of this book will have your child asking for it again and again.

The Animals of Buttercup Farm by Phoebe and Judy Dunn

June 26, 2010 - 11:01 pm No Comments

There was a time in our house when this was THE book that got read before naptime. It takes you on a trip through Farmer John’s farm complete with cows, chickens, farm cats/kittens, horses, goats, rabbits, pigs and ducks. What makes this book are the fantastic pictures that go along with the text. At the end of the book you feel like you just read a scrapbook from someone’s trip to the farm. A fabulous selection for kids who love farms and animals.
